Six years ago, the fashion world went crazy when Lady Gaga debuted Hedi Slimane’s first bag for Celine on her arm for a visit to the Louvre Museum and dinner in Paris.
While other designers opt for theatrics and much-anticipated runway debuts, Slimane, who is never one to follow the norm, chose to make his public debut casually (and quietly). In fact, it was only after some fashion sleuthing that the bag was ID’d and confirmed to actually be the work of Slimane and Celine.
The bag, which we now know as the Celine 16, looked right at home on the arm of Lady Gaga, a longtime supporter and friend of Hedi Slimane. The moment marked an important new chapter for Celine, and the 16 remains not only a House classic but a favorite of Lady Gaga, who was just spotted with it once again.

Over half a decade since helping Hedi Slimane mark his tenure at Celine, Lady Gaga returns to Paris with her Celine 16, where she will perform at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games alongside Celine Dion.
While the Celine 16 lends a more ladylike and classic appeal, Lady Gaga made it her own, pairing it with a cool bomber jacket, also by Celine, and black track pants.
With so much access to new bag debuts, designer loans, and the like, it’s always refreshing to see celebrities rocking an old favorite—and Lady Gaga with the Celine 16 (a personal favorite) makes me feel a deep connection. After all, a bag lover is a bag lover, celebrity or not.
